Aim: To perform the assay of Metronidazole.
IUPAC Name: 2-(2-methyl-5-nitro-1H-imidazol-1-yl) ethanol
Molecular Formula: C6H9N3O3
Mol. Wt.: 171.2.
Metronidazole contains not less than 99.0 per cent and not more than 101.0 per cent of C6H9N30, calculated on dried basis.
Category: Antiamoebic.
Dose: For trichomoniasis, 200 mg thrice daily, for 7 days. For amoebiasis, 400 mg thrice daily, for 5 to 10 days. For giardiasis, 2 g daily for 3 successive days for adults, 1 g for children and 400 mg daily for infants. Initial dose, by intravenous infusion 15 mg per kg of body weight; subsequent doses, 7.5 mg per kg of body weight upto a maximum of 1 g every six hours, for 7 days or longer.
Description: A white or yellowish, crystalline powder.
Assay:
Weigh accurately about 0.15 g, dissolve in 50 ml of anhydrous glacial acetic acid.
Titrate with 0.1 M perchloric acid, determining the end-point potentiometrically. Carry out a blank titration.
Factor: 1 ml of 0.1 M perchloric acid is equivalent to 0.01712 g of metronidazole.
Storage: Store protected from light and moisture.
Uses: It is used as antiamoebic drug.
